~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This listing is for a circa 1950-1960 illustration of a School Badge. These illustrations are undated, but seem to have been printed on paper older than the image would suggest. The grain of the pictures suggest a type of sugar paper, which I have used to help me date these as having come from a schoolboy's or schoolgirl's annual in the 1950's. The photo/scan has a watermark, the originals will not show this watermark It is entitled simply:
THE BLUE COAT SCHOOL (OLDHAM) It shows: The school badge and motto : Semper Virtutem Quaeramus ("Let us always seek virtue" ) the school was opened in 1834 through the endowment of Thomas Henshaw, In July 1952, the trustees decided that, as the number of boarders in residence was gradually decreasing, Blue Coat should be closed as a residential school and the building converted for use as a secondary modern day school A Bluecoat school is a type of charity school, the first of which was founded in the 16th century. Most of these have closed, some remain open as schools, often on different sites, and some of the original buildings have been adapted for other purposes. They are known as "bluecoat schools" because of the distinctive blue uniform originally worn by the pupils. The colour blue was traditionally the colour of charity, and was a common colour for clothing at the time. The uniform included a blue frock coat, and yellow stockings with white bands
The print measures 255 x 180 mm (10 x 7" ) approximately ( they vary slightly in size). It is blank on the reverse, and is suitable for framing. There is a little age yellowing - please check the larger picture for condition. This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope, and protected inside that envelope by a plastic sleeve. Our use of the term "an original print" is a pictorial image made in a manner which allows it to be multiplied, and originating from the date stated and not the original artwork . This includes examples of various methods of printmaking including wood and steel engravings, etchings, woodcut etc. Many prints inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time, as was this one.
