A colourful and very attractive pictorial map which features a decorative cartouche and compass; a table of distances in miles. Suitable for framing. It shows a pictorial plan covering Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and part of Wiltshire; from Devizes in the NE, across to Clevedon in The NW, down to Lands End in the SW and across to Swanage, Poole Harbour and Bournemouth in the SE.
It includes a compass rose, and vignettes forming coloured sketches of landmarks and architectural features of places shown along the road. Plus literary quotations from Alfred Tennyson - Byron - John Ridd - Gardner - etc. There is a list of places to visit titled with the lines us wants to go to Widdicombe Fair wi' Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke, Old Uncle Tom Cobley an' all.

Provenance information: These maps were originally produced for Pratts Motor Oil Co. which was replaced by The Anglo American Oil Co. Ltd. (Esso) in the 1930s; Published by H. K. McCann Co. Ltd 109 Jermyn St London. Date estimated: 1932-36.
Suitable for framing. It measures overall 465x310mm (18.25x12.25"); printed area 385 x 285mm (15.25 x 11.25"). It has an as published centre fold. It is in good condition with a little age yellowing. It is blank on the reverse apart from titles. It originally would have been in an atlas, edge mounted so as to avoid damage to the map, and not stapled. The watermark does NOT appear on the original map. The map will be packaged in a tube and sent Royal Mail Small Parcels. Postage and packing is charged at cost.
