Sowerby's Whale - Cuvier's Whale

A lovely print from this mammals series by Archibald Thorburn one of the most prolific and respected illustrators of the natural world at the turn of the last century.

Archibald Thorburn ( b. 1860 - d. Hascombe, Surrey 1935) was a Scottish artist. He was born at Viewfield House, Lasswade, Midlothian in Scotland and was the son of Robert Thorburn (1818–1885) a portrait miniaturist to Queen Victoria.

Info. Sowerby's Whale (Mesoplodon bidens), aka North Atlantic or North Sea beaked whale. - Cuvier's Whale (Ziphius cavirostris), aka goose beaked whale the only member of the genus Ziphius.

Suitable for framing. The print measures 315 x 253 mm ( 12.5 x 10 " ) approx. on very good quality grade card, with a blank reverse. There is a some age yellowing with handling marks to the edges. This item will be packaged in a board backed envelope. "Info.” in the description is my research, although relevant to the accompanying image or article, is not necessarily in the text.
