It shows sketches on a full page drawn by Louis Wain with funny handwritten caption style notes about the antics of a cat and a hippopotamus. It's a typical fun Louis Wain scene, well known for his cat pictures, but often used other animals, particularly in the early years of his career. There is the Louis Wain signature on the front of the engraving. This print is suitable for framing. sleekburnc.
Info: Louis Wain was an English artist born Clerkenwell, London in 1860. He was best known for his drawings (which often featured large-eyed cats and kittens) of anthropomorphised animals. He was a freelance artist and worked reive throughout the 1880's and beyond for various publications and newspapers including the Illustrated London News, The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, The Sketch, etc. He illustrated many childrens books.
There is an unrelated print on the reverse drawn by Fred Hall titled Types of Sportsmen "Worms" showing a fisherman or angler walking along a path; his line is loaded with a worm. The Sketch was a British illustrated newspaper/magazine, which focused on the theatre, high society and aristocracy, art, sport and leisure A Journal of Art and Actuality. It ran between 1893 and 1959. It was renowned for its engravings, images, and later, high photographic content.
From the date stated and not a later reproduction. This is a page from a Victorian periodical and therefore is printed on both sides. The page measures overall approximately 350x245mm (14 x 9.5"ins.) approx. There is some age yellowing around the edges with handling marks to border (please see scans); the borders are titled, dated and numbered - please check the larger pictures for condition. This item will be packaged in a tube and sent RM Small Parcels.
