Original Antique Newspaper

DATED 1875

A publication similar to The Illustrated London News. This issue is Printed on Thin Paper for Foreign Post. This first part of the description features a list of images i.e. engravings from sketches, drawings etc (these sometimes have descriptive articles but not always). They include:

The Arctic Expedition: An Eskimo Ball at Disko - full front page engraving From a Sketch by an Artist on Board The Pandora - a scene at Disko, Greenland showing the crew and sailors of the ship Pandora fraternising with the eskimo outside a hut which is the venue for a ball. The eskimo or inuit men have their hair wrapped in an ornate style, piled high on top of their heads. The drawings were sketched by an artist on board the Pandora, Mister George de Wylde.

I have put in some of the modern inuit names for reference purposes.

A double page engraving entitled A Labour of Love by C. E. Perugini - it shows a pretty young lady arranging flowers in a vase. The engraving is blank on the reverse and is an extra supplement to The Graphic - info. Charles Edward Perugini (b. Naples, Italy 1839 - d.1918), originally Carlo Perugini, was an Italian born artist. (info. He married Kate the youngest daughter of Charles Dickens).

A full page showing a ship stopping off at Gibraltar On the Way to India - five engravings Sketches by One of Our Special Artists Despatched to Accompany the Prince of Wales:

Quinton near Birmingham: The Cottage Convalescent Home - an engraving showing a beautiful cottage with ornate slated roof, built by Messrs Chance Brothers, proprietors of the Alkali Works at Oldbury, to benefit the workers in the company. The engraving is from a photograph by H. J. Whitlock, Birmingham.

The Church of St Edmund the King and Martyr, Lombard Street, City of London: A Harvest Festival Service - showing a packed church and the service being conducted. This is an original USED newspaper not a scan and not a later re-print. If there is a particular date you require in regards to this item eg. for a birthday or anniversary etc please ask

Ten pages ( 20 sides). This is an issue specially produced and printed on thin paper for posting abroad. It measures 400 x 300 mm (16 x 11.75 "). The spine has been reinforced/repaired at some point in the past, the pages are loose with binding witness marks. There is a stain to the bottom corner of all the pages not affecting any of the engravings (see scan of front page). There is some age yellowing, and small marks and minor cuts tears and blemishes due to their great age - anything more than minor will be mentioned in the main body of the description. The engravings vary in size. There are no outer advertising pages/cover unless otherwise stated. The engravings are NOT in colour unless otherwise stated.

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot guarantee that the issue is complete 'as published' - but what I have described above IS present. As far as I can tell there are no pages missing, but if you are looking for something in particular in this issue PLEASE ASK. If you require information on size of articles (i.e. number of words), sizes of images, please ask before bidding or buying. The process of the page numbering in The Graphic issues carry on from the previous issue and therefore do not start at number 1.

The descriptive text in my listing, details the content in my words and not necessarily what is written on the original page. "Info." in the description is my research, although relevant to the accompanying image or article, is not necessarily in the text. This item will be packaged in a tube. The four digit number in brackets in title is for my ref only.
